The "grandfathering" period for practice time required to qualify for American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Inc. (ABPN) certification in epilepsy has been extended from the year 2017 to 2018.
AES, at the request of the AES Fellowship Program Directors Committee, successfully petitioned ABPN and obtained this extension to further facilitate the establishment of additional epilepsy training programs.
David Ficker, MD, chair of the Committee noted, "we have made significant progress in the development of ACGME-approved training programs in epilepsy, and this request was made to allow ample time for all program directors interested in qualifying for certification to prepare and sit for the exam."
As a result of the AES request, ABPN requested and received an extension from the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) of the grandfathering period for applicant practice time to qualify for the certification examination in epilepsy. Previously set to expire after the 2017 exam administration, it has been extended through the 2018 exam administration. Beginning in 2019, applicants for epilepsy certification will need to have completed 12 months in an accredited fellowship program.
