You can contribute to the AES research funds by walking, virtually walking or sponsoring someone who is walking for one of the AES Teams.  All funds raised by the AES teams comes back to AES to be used to support pre- and postdoctoral fellowships and other research funding.  Last year six walk teams raised a total of $56,026.  You can help us beat that total.  The team that raises the most money gets to hold the Yale Cup for the year.  This year's teams include Team AES, Team Driefuss, Team Pellock-Penry, Team McClesky and Yale Epilepsy Susan Spencer Team. For a number of decades IV benzodiazepines have been used in clinical settings for treating status epilepticus.  Effective use of these drugs by paramedics in the out-of-hospital treatment of status was demonstrated more recently in a 2001 study reported in the New England Journal of Medicine.  In that study, Lorazepam was also found to be better therapy for these seizures compared to diazepam.  Now a large NIH/NINDS-sponsored national trial reported in the February 16, 2012 issue of [more]

Did you know that the Special Interest Groups host ongoing discussions here on Professional Connections?  Several are looking for feedback on topics for their December 2012 program (including Tumor Induced Epilepsy; Neonatal Seizures; and Non-epileptic Seizures).  At least one (Quality Indicators) has posted a PDF of the PPT slides from their 2011 program.

There are several exciting new activities at this year's Annual Meeting in Baltimore. 

Not only will we be celebrating the Society's 75th Anniversary, but we've add new programs.  Tickets for the 75th 'event' are on sale on the website.  This will be a chance to visit with colleagues, network, eat, learn about the history of epilepsy care and the AES, enjoy entertainment, drink, dance and more.

Declaration receives record number of MEP signatures

A Written Declaration on Epilepsy was passed in the European Parliament yesterday, 15th September 2011. Submitted by the European Advocates for Epilepsy Working Group in collaboration with Epilepsy Advocacy Europe – a joint task force of the International League Against Epilepsy and the International Bureau for Epilepsy, approval of the declaration marks a significant step in the efforts of both groups to increase the quality of life of people with epilepsy.
